Pavilion 4 builds upon the environmentally-focused first phase Pavilions 1 to 3, applying the Passivhaus approach to drive down energy consumption and increase occupant comfort.
The building has an innovative, easily controlled natural ventilation system that provides night pre-cooling in summer, as well as highly insulated and airtight building envelope, and high quality triple glazing. A single ventilation system provides year-round fresh air for office occupants and is part of the designed-in climate resilience, ensuring that the building will manage future heat waves while maintaining comfort.
It is incredibly rewarding when clients love the buildings we create: here, Loughborough University client Catherine Fleming talks through the decision to choose Passivhaus for the Sportpark Pavilion 4 office extension. Joel Callow, one of the founding directors of Beyond Carbon, talks about the process of delivering a Passivhaus building, and the extensive benefits to occupants.
The Pavilion 4 project is not only one of the very few certified Passivhaus office buildings in the UK, but also presented unique challenges, as the extension had to tie in architecturally with the design of the previous three pavilions completed in 2009. The project was therefore an exploration of moving from environmental best practice in 2009 to a modern-day Passivhaus. Beyond Carbon worked closely with David Morley Architects and the rest of the design team to reinterpret the original design and deliver best-practice environmental performance.
